History of Belmont Bible Church
Belmont
Bible Church has been serving the Lord in Downers Grove for over 50 years! It
all started in 1940 when Miss Ivadell Long, a Salvation Army lassie,
began hosting a Bible Study/Sunday School. The meeting place was a
rented hall on Belmont Road. By 1945, worship services were
also being held. With a vision for a new church and church
building, land was purchased in 1949. In March 1950, a church constitution was approved by 33 charter members; Belmont Community Church was now formally organized.
Construction began later that year and the building was dedicated on
March 11, 1951. From the beginning the building was too small for
it's congregation. Many
additions were added over the years including; a basement in 1952, a basement
addition in 1955, and in 1958, the purchase of additional land and construction
of the parsonage.
Later, in the 70s, a three-level
addition was added to the church.
Many men have served as Pastor over the years.
Rev. Arthur Holmes (1949-1951)
Rev. K. Stanley Wright (1952-1958)
Rev. Gordon B. Kemble (1958-1963)
Rev Joseph Dedic (1964-1973) Under Pastor Dedic the church affiliated with
the Independent Fundamental Churches of America (IFCA).
Rev. Charles Dinwiddie, Jr. (1974-1991) Belmont Community Church
became Belmont Bible Church during the Pastorate of Rev. Dinwiddie.
Rev. Robert Greer (1992-1996)
Rev. Ronald L. Brown (1999-Aug. 2008) During the Pastorate of Rev. Brown, a
baptistry was installed in the sanctuary. The first baptismal service was
held on October 2, 2005 and 12 were baptized that day.
Rev. Mark Moore (Aug. 2008 - present)
Since it's dedication in 1951, the church has been and will continue to be dedicated to the service of the Lord!
Belmont
Bible Church is blessed to have a charter member still attending. This history page is dedicated to Mrs. Esther
Fleetwood. The hymn you are listening to is her favorite.
Words: Joseph M. Scriven, 1855
Music: Charles C. Converse, 1868
What a Friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.
Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer.
Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge, take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do your friends despise, forsake you? Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He’ll take and shield you; you will find a solace there.
Blessed Savior, Thou hast promised Thou wilt all our burdens bear
May we ever, Lord, be bringing all to Thee in earnest prayer.
Soon in glory bright unclouded there will be no need for prayer
Rapture, praise and endless worship will be our sweet portion there.
